For now I'm staying because my newsletter and those I follow are primarily nazi free. Now and then I, or the person I'm following, have to block some assholes but it's very rare (so far). I still feel I'm providing a service for people here on Substack that want a pleasant experience so I want to continue that as long as I can. I left Twitter because the nazi's were clogging up what I was trying to do there (talk about art and books) and it became not helpful to my or anyone else's mental health to spend most of the time dealing with nazi's instead of talking about art or books on Twitter. That nazi-saturated-air is not the situation here on Substack yet and hopefully it won't become that way. That's why I added my name on the Substackers against Nazi's letter - I hope this platform will remain more sensible than Twitter. 🤞🤞 So, I'm staying for now, watching to see how things go, reserving the option to leave if it gets tiresome.
Thank you for this. It is helpful to me. To be honest, my experience here has been pretty nazi-free as well, and I value connections I am making with other writer/artists like yourself. I don't want to view this through rose colored glasses. The nazis were here before I got here, but on the strength of people like Heather Cox Richardson and Joyce Vance, among many others, I felt like this might be a reasonable place to set up camp. I guess we'll just have to see.
I'm glad your here too.
I probably blocked more people in the last day from the responses to the PoohBah reply to the Substackers against nazis letter.
I'm very glad you're here too!! So glad we're friends now!! I too am grateful for the connections I've made with other writers and artists here! And I applaud and appreciate people like Joyce Vance and Heather Cox Richardson too!! It's up to all of us to create, build and maintain our community. As long as we're able to block and delete as needed Substack is more beneficial than not to our community of sane and kind people! So I'm 100% in favor of building and maintaining our creative community and helping there to be many more of us than the nazi knuckleheads!!
It’s tricky. I don’t read anything on Substack besides this and chef author David Lebovitz, and I can read both elsewhere...which I might actually prefer.
I am trying not to duplicate posts between The Panda Chronicles and here. so far, I am going to try to stay. You'll hear all about it, for sure, no matter what I decide.
Dear Anne, As a self-described Top Fan of yours, I will follow you anywhere. As to your Dilemmas, I have no idea what you should do. As your opening statement said, "it seems like there are nazis and fascist everywhere". Ain't it the truth. On the streets, on campuses, in grocery stores, in hospitals, blah, blah, blah. As I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of Substack, Threads, Mastodan and other platforms, I can't unravel this conundrum of yours. I wish I could be helpful in this matter.
If you decide to post from the Moon, I'll follow you there.
I hope there is more than one bear on the moon, because if there was only one, they would be lonely. Of course there must be cake, and where there is cake, there is frosting.
As my profile says, I'm only here for the pandas. I left twitter when you did. Even though I wasn't seeing hateful posts, I didn't want Elon Musk making money by showing me ads. I enjoy Mastodon, though I wish more of our friends would join us there. Is anyone on Threads? So far I only read a few things on Substack so I'm not seeing anything bad here. I hope it stays that way. We can't keep moving just because the crazy people move in, at least not if we can avoid it. I hope you can stay, just because I'm sure that moving again is a pain, but I'll follow you wherever you go.
I wish more had come over to Mastodon too. I don't have an account on Threads, but there is a move afoot for federate Threads with Activity Pub (don't ask me what that is. It's the thingie Mastodon runs on. Right now there are just a few people whose posts are starting to show up, but if they can get it to work right, I'll be able to connect through mastodon with people on Threads. Yay! Once they've opened it all up, I'll try to track down the Threads addresses of the panda peeps.
Also, I'm not quite ready to jump ship here, having gotten some reassurances that things are not as dire here as they had gotten on Twitter. I probably wouldn't go elsewhere, just migrate back to doing everything on The Panda Chronicles.
People who give ultimata are essentially bullies, unless the ultimatum is extemely relevant to both of you. You can't turn your back on a whole platform because you have issues with some of the people that use it. It's easy enough to block the voices you don't want to hear. Would those people poke out their own eyes to prevent seeing something objectionable? Or deafen themselves to prevent hearing it? There are extreme right and extreme left sympathizers everywhere. They don't speak for the majority. If we let them do so, we're giving them power they shouldn't have.
Thank you for this dose of reality. I really hate the idea of ceding ground to the bullies and nazis. I found lots of people to block in the replies to the reply letter from the Substack Poohbahs. I've not really run across any of them in my day to day experience here, since the people I tend to follow are mostly in the writerly/artist realm.
Leaving Xitter made sense to me. Between the promotion and proliferation of nazis, and how Elmo was treating the long time employees of Xitter, I really couldn't stay. For now I will stay put here. We'll see how the future shakes out.
I do not want any nazis either. I am here for you, Anne, Heather Cox Richardson, Joyce Vance, Status Kuo, etc. I know how to block people and have blocked people in some of the columns I read. Ever on guard and watchful.

I am all in favor of blocking nazi knuckleheads.
Me, too!!!

I am staying because those I patronize (you, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and others). I worth it
Thank you. Your support means a bunch.

Aw! Your comment made me feel all warm and fuzzy. Are there bears on the moon? Is there cake? at least frosting? This could be an option!
I suspect there are bears on the moon. Definitely cake and for sure frosting. Go for it!

We definitely need more panda peeps!
I'm happy to just read and watch The Panda Chronicles.
And the pandas told me they are glad you are here too.
