I'm Still Here!
Here I am, facing the blank page…screen?
I’m excited to have so many of my followers from The Panda Chronicles signing up for my newsletters here. If you have discovered me here and feel the need for more some panda satire in your life, you can head over to The Panda Chronicles to find a vast archive of panda satire for your enjoyment/edification/sanity.
Now where was I?
Oh yes…I know I’m kind of explaining who I am, rather than, ya know, just writing about all the things that I’m thinking about in these times we are in. And while I sit here, tappity tappity tapping on my keyboard, a hurricane is headed to Florida, and TFG (you know who I mean) just keeps on revealing all the crimes we didn’t know about, on top of all the ones that we did!
Who needs some pandas to help us clam down after thinking about TFG?
Did I mention I once worked for a well known coffee company? No? Well, I’ll get around to that eventually!
In my 12 or years of writing and drawing panda satire, a whole universe and cast of characters has come to life. Bob was the first named panda to trod the panels, usually accompanied by Mehitabel, the cat. Many more pandas, some based on real pandas and some that are made up, have found their way into these stories. I’ll leave it to you to dive into the archives and discover them for yourself, at least for now.
So here’s what I am thinking about today:
Can the GOP quit saying that outlawing abortion is about “saving lives”????
I’mma gonna say this really slow, so the people in the back can hear me:
Abortion is an economic issue. Abortion is healthcare.
Think about it: if people (women and anyone who can get pregnant) can’t control how and when they get pregnant, or even if they get pregnant, their ability to get an education is impacted. Their ability to earn a living is impacted, which means their ability to live where and how they want is impacted. Their children’s lives are impacted.
If financial stability and wealth are generational, by taking away the right to determine if and when you want to have children, you condemn each successive generation to greater degrees of hardship.
If the GOP really cared about children, they would make school lunches free for all children. They would improve healthcare and make it affordable for everyone. They would have generous paid parental leave policies.
But they do none of these things.
Instead, they talk about outlawing contraceptives. They talk about criminalizing abortions and jailing doctors who preform them, and anyone who helps someone get an abortion. Some states are trying to figure out ways they can prevent a person leaving their state to get one. The only way they could do that would be subject all women to searches so personal I am cringing as I type. Most people who can get pregnant today have not lived in a time where abortion was not safe and legal, even if it was not quite so universally available to all who needed one.
Have I depressed everyone enough for one day? Let’s go out with some more pandas!
Let’s meet again next week!
Till then…Be the Bear!
