I’ve felt more than a little ill since the opinion of the so-called Supreme Court came down on Monday. Everything we thought was true, that the courts would protect us from the worst of the former guy’s criminal impulses, that there were still a few guard rails in place, turns out not to be true.

We have one chance to turn this thing around. In November we need to elect a Democratic president. A Democratic House, and keep, or expand the Democrats in the Senate. We’re not going to do it by fighting among ourselves. We must stand united with our overlapping concerns, that don’t always align. I don’t know how we combat propaganda, except with truth.

This painting comes from a photograph I took 12 years ago in Italy, at a banquet/performance in a small town in Tuscany. May our truth be like fire, that burns away the division and the lies the Republican Party likes to spew. May the fire burn away the unholy right-wing authoritarians that would deny people health- care, deny children food, deny peoples’ rights to exist.
