I had all sorts of good intentions about writing a well thought piece about voting and old friends and stopping fascism, but then on Friday night we had a hellacious wind storm which knocked power out to the whole of Whidbey Island and other parts of western WA.
The power is still out at my house, but fortunately the “downtown” core of scenic Freeland is back on line so the library is once again a haven for people using the internet and recharging all their things. Thank goodness for libraries for so many reasons!
Did I mention that tomorrow is the last day you can vote?
Well let me mention it now.
Windstorms and other natural disasters are great levelers of political philosophy. When a tree falls across your driveway, you don’t ask the person with the chainsaw who they are voting for.
As the wind howled on Friday night, and as trees cracked and went ka-whump all through the woods around my house, as I prayed to whatever goddesses I might believe in at times like this, that none of the ka-whumping trees would fall on my house or my car that I can not afford to replace, I couldn’t help thinking about all the people voting through tomorrow.
The GOP is acting like an out of control windstorm and they don’t really care who the ka-whumping trees fall on. People like Marge yell that it’s the Democrats who want to destroy everything, even as she votes against legislation that will create jobs, support children, build roads and internet connections. Kevin wants to shut down the government if they will not defund Social Security or Medicare. Tell me who that helps?
We have been saying for years that this is the most important election in our history. This time I think it really is.
The coming election day, election reckoning, whatever you want to call it is now upon us. I hope you all registered in time, and have already voted or a plan to vote tomorrow. There are so many crucial races, even in safely blue states. Does such a thing even exist?
All I know is this election has me as edgy as Friday night’s windstorm did. I hope by this time next week, we know that, for now, democracy is right where it needs to be.
Best yet. You do have a knack for this!
After this election lets not have anymore k-whumps or windstorms. I can't take much more of this . . . how 'bout you? So glad your house/car wasn't demolished and that you and yours are safe, Anne.
