Hey there Liz…
(Do you mind if I call you Liz?) Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for your part in attempting to save democracy. I guess we’ll find out how that all turns out, won’t we?
I would be the last person who would minimize the sacrifice you made to uphold the rule of law in investigating all the blatant coup adjacent attempts to overthrow democracy by the former guy and current twice impeached, three times indicted current candidate for the republican nomination for president again.
But see, here’s the thing: are you aware that all the times you voted with him, and policies you supported over the years vis-à-vis voter suppression and all that kind of stuff, well, that’s part of what made it possible for TFG to try to steam roller over democracy.
I know it’s not your fault that the rest of the Republican Party are a bunch of spineless wimps who were mostly too chicken to call out TFG’s lies about the election in the period between November 2020 and when the Electoral College certified all the votes. I mean, it’s great that Mike Pence did not take the opportunity that TFG was shoveling his way to reject the electoral votes, but he COULD have been outspoken (as you were) about the facts, mainly that TFG LOST, and he should get over it and get on with packing up his stuff (not the classified documents, though! Gotta give those back!) and make way for Joe and Jill and all their dogs to move into the White House.
I know we are on opposite sides of the political spectrum, but I hope by this time you realize that you, as a staunch conservative, had at least some small part in what the Republican Party has become. I’m pretty sure that at some point, you’ll probably run for president. I hope you will take the lessons learned from this debacle to heart, and consider that for a two party system to survive, we all need to be playing by the same rules. I’m sure there have been a fair share of dirty tricks on the Democratic side as well, but really, since the 1990’s the republicans have become much worse. (Thanks, Newt!) The more people who are engaged with democracy and voting and holding office, the better a country we will be.
I’m not sure how, or even if, we are going to survive this little contretemps, but, if the apocalypse is approaching, I just wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you for trying to clean up the mess. Despite everything, I tend to be an optimist, and I, for one, will be extremely pissed if my optimism is misplaced.
Sincere regards,
A Democratic voter
PS: loved the blue suit!
And Huzzah for pandas!
I think we all owe Liz Cheney a vote of thanks for her stand against Trump while her Republican Party passed the cool aid jug around. I know I have never agreed with her on any legislation, but I will give her this: she has put country before
party. And that takes guts. I love your deft touch in praising Cheney for her opposition to Trump, but I also love your gentle admonitions that perhaps she should have spoken out sooner. Excellent writing on your part! And then panda
cartoons! What more could we ask for?🐼❤️
